Flankpain,

For a year now i have been suffering from mid-upper back pain and get excruciating spasms around my left side. I have a continuous ache inside my left shoulder blade. For the past year I have been to multiple chiropractors, physiotherapists, rheumatologists, and Osteopaths.

Until recently, they all said I had intra-scapula pain and weak back muscles. In the last month I have seen the England football (soccer) teams Osteopath and from me explaining my symptons alone he said I had hypermobility of my ribs. On inspection he said that ribs 4-8 on my left side were hypermobile at the costovertabral joint. As well as the pain I get I also get popping or clunking (npt painful though) in the middle of my chest and under my left abs, which again suggest hypermobile ribs. Apparently if they are out at the back they will be loose at the front too.

Although no one as yet has diagnosed me with slipping rib syndrome, from all the literature I have read the symptons seem spot on. Different to you in that my problems lie with my upper ribs and not the floaters alone.

Although manipulation and putting the ribs back relieves pain for a day or two, the aching sensation soon comes back and with any heavy breathing activities the spasms occur.

I am only 23 and was a soccer player till a year ago when I received a heavy trauma to my rear rib cage. I have not played since, nor can I run or do much activity. The acheing under my shoulder blade is so bad now I have had to leave work and all i did was sit at a desk all day.

On the advice of the England Ostepath and from the reading I have done I am now seeking Prolotherapy as it seems this is the only avenue left for a permanent cure. Over a number of weeks and sessions it can actually heal the loose ligament and keep the ribs in place.

Perhaps it might be worth looking in to instead of paying out three times a week for the rest of your life.

Unfortunately for me Prolotherapy is a niche in England, but in the States it seems to be beginning to thrive. Worth a look and some research from what I have read.
